Photobiomodulation: Case Series Report
Results from this small study suggest that transcranial plus intranasal NIR PBM therapy may be safely used with mild to moderately severe dementia and AD (baseline MMSE of 10—24). Results showed significant improvement in cognition, functional abilities for daily living, and improved QoL. PBM was very well tolerated, exhibiting no adverse effects. The treatments likely need to be continued, however, on a regular, long-term basis. This suggests the importance of having PBM devices that are amenable to home use for treating dementia and AD. Results suggest that large-scale, controlled studies with homogeneous populations are warranted.

Improved metabolic functioning is one of the most easily recognizable effects ofPBM. and increased intracellular ATP production is one the most strongly supported mechanisms. A general finding that mitochondrial dysfunction. inadequate supplies of ATP, and oxidative stress are contributorv factors in almost all forms of brain disease . This has been reported for neurological conditions such as major depressive disorder [6 1], traumatic brain injury , Parkinson's disease , and for AD .
One of the changes that is easiest to measure after tPBM, is the change In cerebral blood flow and oxvgenation. This applies In expenmental animals, and especially in human subjects.
Inflammation is the one of the innate immune system's defenses against foreign bodies such as bacteria and viruses. On a cellular level, it occurs when the transcription factor NF -KB is activated. While acute inflammation is positive, chronic inflammation can have very negative effects. Many diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and mood disorders, can be traced at least in part to chronic inflammation.
It should not be forgotten that when any kind of PBM light is shone onto a living animal, it is inevitable that some stem cells will be exposed to light. It is known that stem cells respond well to PBM in terms of proliferation and differentiation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is a safe, non-invasive, and non-thermal modality that is based on a strong body of research dating back to the 1960s. Also known as low-level laser (or light) therapy, it uses either visible red or near-infrared (NLR) light to stimulate, heal, and repair damaged or dying tissue cells. "Ille mechanisms of action involve the stimulation of mitochondria by the absorption of photons in cytochrome c oxidase, resulting in increased adenosine triphosphate production, reduced oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory effects,6 and increased focal cerebral blood flow.

was very skeptical about trying laser therapy for symptoms from my stroke last October. I was color blind, poor vision in my right eye making me almost blind. My left eyesight was better but damaged by the stroke. My balance was off and weak on my right side making it difficult to walk without a cane. I also have experienced severe headaches every day since the stroke.
I received an evaluation and my first laser treatment on a Monday. During the procedure I only felt some warmth to my skin. After that first treatment, I was home watching TV when for the first time was able to see much better out of my right eye and I was able to see color. My headaches are much less frequent and sever. My wife had a stroke that has left her unable to walk, feed herself or speak. Since her stroke she has had uncontrollable very loud outbursts of yelling and making sounds.
